Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland holds many secrets. For hundreds of years experts and visitors alike have puzzled over the carvings in the chapel. Whilst some debate whether they point to hidden treasure, Edinburgh composer Stuart Mitchell thinks he has cracked one part of the enigma.

He believes that the ornate ceiling of carved arches, featuring 213 decorated cubes holds a code for medieval music. His father Thomas Mitchell spent 20 years cracking this code in the ceiling and now Stuart is orchestrating the findings for a new recording called The Rosslyn Motet.

They hope that the music, when played on medieval instruments in situ, will resonate throughout the chapel unlocking a secret in the stone.

The breakthrough to interpreting the notation came when Mitchells father discovered that the markings carved on the face of the cubes seem to match a phenomenon called Cymatics or Chladni patterns. Chladni patterns form when a sustained note is used to vibrate a sheet of metal covered in powder producing marks. The frequency used dictates the shape of the pattern, for example; the musical note A below middle C vibrates at 440 KHz and produces a shape that looks like a rhombus. Different notes can produce various shapes including flowers, diamonds and hexagons - shapes all present on the Rosslyn cubes. Stuart Mitchell believes this is beyond coincidence and has assigned a note to each cube.

I shadowed Footloose out at the Marri-rott this evening and rode my li'll Honda out to Linconshire to do so. I discovered this neat little airport on the way out there, maybe ten minutes past O'hare. Quite a few planes on the ramp, some learjets, your assorted dentist killers. These huge decaying hangers. Maybe I'll stop by tomorrow and poke around until someone calls the Homeland Security and/or I make myself late for work.

I've been sleeping on the roof the past few nights it's been nice. I suppose it's a last ditch effort to do something vaguely outdoorsey before the cold settles in. Went to Angel's Katrina benifit last nite at the always-about-to-close-and-never-reopen-ever-ever-again-we-mean-it-this-time bowling alley-cum hipster watering hole. The turnout was a little slight, considering the number of bands on the bill and the fact it was only five frigging bucks. Bobby performed a few new songs without the Gypsies. He's venturing into some Brian Ferry territory which isn't as bad as it may sound. Brahm from the WPP also played, but I got there too late.
I'm working with the CKC again this week and it's good to see the crew again. They moved into this swanky new office complex with their own loading dock and shop and costume storage.

Didn't go hear the db's last nite. They went on way earlier than I had assumed they would. Boo. Instead, April took me to a house party where I drank beer and played with a blind puppy. Made me miss that crippled old cat I once knew in a former life. In career-related news I landed two design gigs yesterday: Schoolhouse Rock Live! at the aforementioned theatre I sit and type this to you now, and a Stephen Sondheim review at the Mercury that goes up at the end of October. Huzzah for the benjamins!
Tomorrow is my day off and I plan on scooting about the city in a most cavalier manner. Over and out.

Here I sit on a Saturday evening, whiling away the time before the second performance of Grand Hotel. I type this to you as I watch the blue-hairs and tourists file in, balding heads and backwards cub hats and freakish pastel dye-jobs staring back at me. The band is now starting to tune up and I glance over at the meter modules to confirm that signal is being sent. I should really clean up some of the detrius left over from tech: coiled audio and ethernet cables of varying sizes on the floor, warped gaff, used up spray paint, empty pro-cell boxes, in front of me a box of medical tape, rubbing alcohol, red trojans, a rainbow of sharpies.
After the show tonight I think I'll ride my nifty new bicycle over to the hideout block party and hear the db's.
